2007 Results

The Tuscaloosa Triathletes would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and especially the competitors are the 2007 Black Warrior Triathlon. We had a great turnout of 114 individuals and 4 relay teams. This more than double our number from last year; 54 individuals and 3 relay teams. Thank you for your support and participation.

The 2007 results are now final and available for your viewing.

2008 Information Summary

The Tuscaloosa Triathletes are pleased to announce the redisgned triathlon formerly known as the Lake Lurleen Summer Breeze, The Last Chance Triathlon and the UCP Life Without Limits Triathlon has been renamed as the Black Warrior Triathlon. This name change will allow us to maintain the name and date even if the event grows larger than the facilities at Lake Lurleen State Park.

Due to the generorsity of our sponsors, we will once again offer prize money for first, second and third places for both males and females. First - $150, Second - $100, Third - $50.

The Black Warrior Triathlon will once again be held at Lake Lurleen State Park near Coker, Alabama. Lake Lurleen State Park is 7 miles west of Northport/Tuscaloosa along US Highway 82. Plenty of road signs mark the route from US Highway 82. The event will begin at 8:00 AM

Awards

Overall Male and Females will be awarded first, second and third. The top male and female masters will also be awards, as well as the top three relay teams.

Age group awards will be three deep in male & female five year categories:

15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and 85+.

Course

The redisgn of the course shortens the swim portion to 600 yards. That will be basically from the swim beach to the boat ramp. It is advisable to bring something to put on your feet to walk on the paved road from the transition area to the swim beach. Map. On June 11, 2007, the water temperature was 87 degrees. Therefore, it is anticipated that wet suits will NOT be allowed.

The 17 mile bike course will be basically the same as last year but will be in a more controlled area. The course leaves Lake Lurleen State Park goind south on Lake Lurleen Road. It turns right (north) onto Upper Columbus Road for 3.5 miles before turning around and going south on Upper Columbus Road. Turn left onto Sam Sutton Road. Turn left onto Mount Olive Road. Turn left onto Lake Lurleen Road. Turn right into Lake Lurleen State Park and return to Transition Area. Map.

The run will remain the same. It is a 3 mile run within the campgrounds portion of the park. The course will exit the transition area to the north and go across the bridge. Take the first road to the right and loop back towards the main road. Turn right and follow the road to the loop at then end and return to the transition area. Map.

Dasani Water and Powerade will be available at the 1 and 2 mile points in the run and at the finish. A course map will be available soon. Hammer Gel will be included in the goodie bags distributed before the race.

Registration

We will maintain our sanctioning with USAT so all USAT rules and fees will be in force. All participants will be required to have a full year or one day USAT membership. There will also be a $3.00 fee to enter the state park. Registration fees will remain the same: Early registration $50 for individuals and $70 for teams (until May 23, 2008). Regular Registration (until 6/20/08): $55 for individuals and $75 for teams and Day of event: $65 for individuals and $85 for teams. After June 20th, registrations can only be done at packet pickup or on race morning prior to 7:30 AM.

Race is limited to 250 participants. Printable registration form is available here, but online registration is preferred and is less expensive (MS Word Format and HTML Format). T-Shirts for the first 200 registrants will be distributed at packet pickup. Other shirts will be mailed after the event.

Hotels

The host hotel is the Best Western in Northport. This hotel is less than 10 miles from Lake Lurleen State Park and is offering 10% discount for triathletes. Their phone number is 205-339-5200.

 

Lake Lurleen State Park

Lake Lurleen State Park is named after Alabama’s only female governor. Lurleen Wallace, the wife of former Governor George C. Wallace, was a native of Tuscaloosa County. As governor she was instrumental in funding a major renovation project of Alabama State Parks.

Lake Lurleen State Park is located 9 miles Northwest of the cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport, Alabama and is 14 miles from the campus of the University of Alabama, Home of the “Crimson Tide.” From Birmingham, take an easy hour's drive down I-59/20.

Directions
From I-20/59, take Exit 71B (I-359 Exchange)
Continue on I-359 for approximately 5 miles to the intersection of US Highway 82
Turn left (West) on US Highway 82
Continue on US Highway 82 West for approximately 5 miles to Tuscaloosa County Road 21 (Upper Columbus Road)
Turn right on County Road 21 (Lake Lurleen State Park Sign)
Continue on County Road 21 for approximately 2.3 miles to another Lake Lurleen State Park Sign (Lake Lurleen Road – No Street Sign)
Turn right at Park Sign
Travel approximately 2.2 miles to the park entrance

On race day, everyone entering the park must pay the park's daily use fee of $3 per person ages 12 - 61 ($1 for children 6-11 and Seniors 62 and up; children under 6 are free. This includes competitors, spectators, everyone). Bring cash! This fee includes park entrance, picnicking, fishing, boat launching and swimming. A State fishing license is required for fishing and is available for purchase at the park.

The 1,625-acre park is a scenic lakeside retreat set on the banks of a 250-acre lake. The park facilities include a modern campground, camp store, activity building, picnic area, play area, pavilions, beach with bathhouse, fishing piers, boat rentals and boat-launch areas.

Camping reservations may be made by telephone to Lake Lurleen State Park 205-339-1558, or through the Central Reservation Center 1-800-ALA-PARK. Collect calls to the park will not be accepted. Reservations are taken between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information on camping, click here.

Packet Pickup

Early packet pickup will be available at a site to be determined. For those NOT picking up their packets on Friday, packets will be available on Saturday morning at the registration area.

Please remember to bring a picture ID and your USAT membership card or printed temporary card. You will not be able to pick up your packet without these items. If you are not yet a member of USAT, one day memberships can be purchased at early packet pickup and on race day.

T-Shirts for the first 200 registrants will be distributed at packet pickup. Other shirts will be mailed after the event.
